Peru boasts a diverse range of climates, from humid on the coast and in the jungle to dry in Ica and Nazca. In Arequipa, Cusco, Puno, and other cities in the highlands of the Andes the sun shines with great intensity meanwhile in the rainforest areas humidity and greenery are the most notable characteristics.

In Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire located at an altitude of 3,300 meters (10,800 ft) in the Peruvian Andes, the climate is temperate with a spring-like feel during the day all year round. However, at night, temperatures drop considerably during winter months (May to August), when they can approach freezing. Mornings are always very cold and a warm coat is necessary due to the high altitude, which can cause chapped lips and dry skin.

Regardless of the time of year, you will feel a chill inside buildings, even for those who are used to the climate. It is common for people to wrap themselves in thin blankets, except when moving about. When outside and active, the sun can be intense and wearing a hat is essential.

What About the Weather in Cusco?

Cusco experiences a dry season (May to August) and a rainy season (January, February, March, November, and December). September is the warmest month on average and July is the coolest.

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu experiences similar weather conditions, with February being the wettest month and the trail is closed for the entire month due to safety concerns and harsh weather conditions. The Inca Trail is the only route that is closed, while other hiking alternatives and excursions remain open. During the rainy season, while the scenery is lush and green, it is important to have proper gear, especially waterproof shoes, as the trail can become slippery.

Also, It is to remember that is mandatory to book the Inca Trail through an authorized operator because independent travelers are not allowed. The operator will purchase tickets; separate spots at the authorized campsites, and provide a professional tour guide to the travelers along the trek. Machu Picchu is open every day of the year from 6 am to 5:30 pm.

Although the dry season offers better weather for hiking, the months of May, June, July, and August are also peak tourist seasons. On the other hand, the rainy season offers a unique and beautiful green landscape, but travelers should come prepared with rain gear and sturdy shoes.
